Why won't my breaker reset?

May 3, 2016

First thing is to identify if your breaker is continuing to trip every time it is flipped closed, or if it is just not closing the circuit.

Should you hear a pop when the breaker handle clicks over, this is indicative of a dead short. Do not make any more attempts and contact a licensed electrician.

Should the breaker handle not click to the 'on' position, make sure that you are switching the breaker to the 'off' position before attempting to switch the breaker back 'on'. Flipping the breaker straight to the 'on' position will just return the breaker to the 'tripped' position. Older breakers, such as Zinsco, are especially tough to flip.
